Has Hip-Hop Influenced the Church?

November 25, 2008

My fiance’ and I were on our way to the gym last week and on the way we saw this clean white Phantom Rolls Royce, and who was driving it? A young pastor from Atlanta. Now I won’t give too many details about his church or what not because I’m not here to put anyone out there. But several pastors in Atlanta here have Rolls Royces, I personally know of 3.

Now she said to me, “You know, 10 years ago pastors weren’t driving rolls royce’s.” Now I haven’t been saved 10 years and neither has she, but I haven’t ever heard of anyone complaining about prosperity teachers like now. Now the Bible does say that Jesus became poor so that we might become rich. And Jesus also said that anything we ask for we will receive it. So I’m not knocking prosperity, but I think that it’s ridiculous for a man to teach about money ALL THE TIME. The only other place I know where people are talking about their jewelry, cars, houses, and jets are in rap songs and videos. These songs also bash people who can’t afford those things or don’t have them. So it’s almost like some of these prosperity teachers are rappers in the pulpit! Who in the WORLD started to seek God and go to church to get paid!? Ain’t too many folks I know. Generally people go to church because they’re depressed, they’re stressed and life has just beat them down. They go to get loved on, not to hear about how to get out of debt.

Now that extra debt education is all good! I love it, keep it. However, there shouldn’t be any such thing as a “prosperity teacher”. There’s nothing but a Gospel teacher, a teacher of Christ. The church I go to has really started to irritate me behind that. It wasn’t until people really continued going to this church that they started to worship money and things. Just last week my pastor said, “I ain’t got time to be talking to you about the new Chrysler coming out. Don’t talk to me about that.” Saying that it’s a Chrysler and he’s rich, so if you’re not talking about Bentleys and Rolls Royce’s kick rocks. Well I have news for people like that. Rich people can have whatever they want. It’s your business if you only want to blow your money on extravagent things, but don’t look down on people because of their preference! I personally love magnums. SRT8’s to be exact. I love 96 impalas. I dont’ care if I’m a billionaire, you’ll see one of each in my garage. Ted Turner (the guy that owns, TBS, cartoon network, CMT and some other stations) is a billionaire and guess what he drives…. a Ford Taurus, why? Because he likes it.

So now there are people at this church struggling because he’s inadvertantly teaching them to keep up with the Jones’s. It’s not right and it’s pissin me off! People, there is NOTHING wrong with money or being rich, I’m not saying that. I believe I’m going to be rich, however, I’m not going to not talk to people, or put people down because they don’t have a million in the bank. Don’t go gettin in no debt because your pastor said if you don’t have anything you don’t live for God. That’s wrong in every sense of wrong! And I’ll stop there, I want to here everyone else’s comments.

I agree with you. There is nothing wrong with being rich. God chooses to bless people in that way and, especially when they’re Christian, they need to be sure that they’re using that money in a way to further the Gospel. The sad thing about this though is that unsaved people might get the wrong idea about Christians. They may think that there is no reason that they should change because they can just keep living the same extravagant life that they are already. Although, this danger doesn’t only come from the rich in the body, but the average person and how he lives his life too.

Interesting that Ted Turner drives a Ford Taurus. I would’ve never thought that!

You’re so right, but you know on the “low” even unsaved people look up to Christians. They’re just hoping to see someone really live the lifestyle so they can have something to believe in and cling to. That IS why it’s so important that we put forth what truly matters in the Kingdom… LOVE!

LOL, yeah, it tripped me out the first time I heard it too, but hey, that’s what he likes! I know if I ever reach millionaire status two cars you will forever see in my garage… a 96 impala and an SRT8 magnum! I think I said that already but man I like em!

I’ve kinda believed that too about the unsaved. I’ve always thought, that, even the most vocal critics and detractors to Christianity [especially those who are trying to disprove it] are just waiting for Christians to give them a reason to become a Christian. And yes, LOVE is the answer!

    “Love your neighbor as yourself!”
